  C. $100. D. $140.

3.Where can you most probably read this passage

  A. In the latest news. B. In a children’s book.

  C. In a travel guide. D. In a sportsman’s diary.

Forest Schools originated in Sweden in the 1950s and spread to other countries, particularly Denmark where they have become an important part of the Danish early years program.

In a typical Danish Forest School, young children from 3 years are taken into the forest for 4 hours each day of the week. They take no toys with them, but instead use only what the forest provides (and their imaginations) to develop their games. There is a primitive hut in the forest, which is used in extreme weather. Activities are child-led and fun, such as finding small animals or stomping in puddles. Because of high adult to child ratios, children can safely try out activities which are often considered too dangerous, such as climbing trees or lighting fires, and by dressing the children in good protective clothing, they are able to play freely. By setting children small manageable tasks at which they are unlikely to fail, and giving genuine praise, children’s independence and confidence grow.

A Swedish scientific study found that children in the Forest School are more balanced and socially capable, have fewer sick days, are more able to concentrate and have better co-ordination than the city nursery children. The primary reason appeared to be the greater opportunities to play in nature, so that children play for longer at a time, tending not to disturb each other as much as children in the city nursery. The study observed that where children were interrupted, they became irritable, their stress level rose, and their ability to concentrate fell.

The study also showed that the Forest School children had 25 % fewer sick days than the city children. One reason for this is that the air is nearly always better outside than indoors. Outside a child is not so exposed to virus and bacteria and not so likely to be infected by other children. Another reason may be that, since stress has been shown to have a negative effect on the immune system, high stress levels may be weakening the city children. The Forest School children, on the other hand, are in a pleasant, natural, fun and less stressful environment.

1.Why is there a primitive hut in the forest

  A. To let children have fun.

  B. To store daily necessities.

  C. To enrich the children’s imagination.

  D. To protect the children from bad weather.

2.What kind of activities do the Forest School children have

  A. Activities to improve grades.

  B. Activities designed for adults.

  C. Activities usually played by braver kids.

  D. Fun activities but with a certain level of danger.

3.The Forest School children are more able to concentrate because ______.

  A. they have more interesting things to do B. they are accompanied by adults

  C. they are not disturbed so often D. they are playing in small groups

4.Which of the following best describes the Forest School children

  A. Free and wild. B. Confident and happy.

  C. Polite and calm. D. Strong and adventurous.

Environmentalists said our planet was bound to die. Now one man says they are wrong. “Everyone knows the planet is in bad shape,” thundered a magazine article last year. “Species are being driven to die out at record rates, and the rivers are so poisonous that fish are floating on the surface, dead.”

But there’s growing belief that what everyone takes for granted is wrong: Things are actually getting better. A new book is about to overturn our most basic assumptions about the world’s environment. Rivers, seas, rain and the atmosphere are all getting better.

The total amount of forests in the world is not declining. The Skeptical Environmentalist by Bjorn Lomborg, professor of statistics at the University of Aarhus in Denmark, is an attack on the misleading claims of environmental groups, and the “bad news” culture that makes people believe everything is getting worse.

Now the attacks are increasingly coming from left-wing environmentalists such as Lomborg, a former member of Greenpeace. The accusation is that, although the environment is improving, green groups — with profits of hundreds of millions of pounds a year — are using scare tactics (戰術) to gain donations. Lomborg’s book doesn’t deny global warming — probably the biggest environmental threat — but destroys almost every other environmental claim with many official statistics.

The Worldwatch Institute claims that deforestation(采伐森林) has been speeding over the last 30 years. Buy Lomborg says that is simply rubbish. Since the dawn of agriculture the world has lost about 20% of its forest cover, but in recent decades the forest area’s depleting has come to a stop. According to UN figures, the area of forests has remained almost steady, at about 30% of total land area, since 1940s. Forests in countries such as the US, UK and Canada have actually been expanding over the past 40 years. Despite all the warnings the Amazon rainforest has only shrunk by about 15%.

Nor are all our species dying out. Some campaigners claim that 50% of all species will have died out within 50 years. But other studies show only 0.08% of species are dying out each year. Conservation efforts have been successful. Whales are no longer threatened and the bald eagle is off the endangered list.

Environmental groups claim that many of the improvements are the results of their campaigns. Stephen Tindale, director of Greenpeace UK, said, “There are important examples, such as acid rain and ozone, where things weren’t as bad as predicted, and that’s because our behavior changed.”

1.What is Lomborg’s main argument in The Skeptical Environmentalist

  A. Our planet is in bad shape.

  B. The world’s environment is improving.

  C. The total amount of forests is declining.

  D. Conservation efforts have been successful.

2.What is Lomborg’s main accusation of environmentalists

  A. They changed their behavior toward the environment.

  B. They only told people bad news about the environment.

  C. They scared people into making donations.

  D. They overturned our basic assumption about the world’s environment.

3.The underlined word “depleting” is close in meaning to “_______”.

  A. speeding B. limiting

  C. expanding D. reducing

4.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage

  A. Are all species dying out B. Isn’t conservation powerful

  C. Is Our Planet Bound to Die D. Aren’t environmentalists wrong

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is making it possible for companies to monitor workers’ behavior in great detail and in real time. Start to slack off (懈怠), and AI could talk to your boss.

One company offering such services is London-based start-up Status Today. Its AI platform relies on a regular supply of employee data, including everything from the files you access to when you use a key card. From this, it builds a picture of how employees normally function and signals any unusual performance. The idea is to spot when someone might become a security risk by doing something different from their usual behavioral patterns. “All of this gives us fingerprint of a user, so if we think the fingerprint doesn’t match, we raise a warning”, says Mircea Dumitrescu, the company’s chief technology officer.

The system also aims to catch employee actions that could accidentally cause a security breach (漏洞), like opening malware (惡意軟件).“We’re not monitoring if your computer has a virus.” says Dumitrescu. “We’re monitoring human behaviors.”

But catching the security breach means monitoring everyone, and the AI can also be used to track employee productivity. “It seems like they are just using the reputation of AI to give an air of lawfulness to old-fashioned workplace surveillance (監視),” says Javier Ruiz Diaz of digital campaigning organization the Open Rights Group. “You have a right to privacy and you shouldn’t be expected to give that up at work.”

Exactly how companies use the system will be up to them, but it’s hard to shake the picture of an AI constantly looking over employees’ shoulders. “It will bother people, and that could be counterproductive if it affects their behavior,” says Paul Bemal at the University of East Anglia.

Phil Legg at the University of the West of England says it will never catch every security risk. “If people know they’re being monitored, they can change their behavior,” he says.

1.According to the text, AI monitors employees by ________.

  A. taking pictures of them B. getting access to their data

  C. signaling their usual performance D. catching their actions

2.What’s Javier Ruiz Diaz’s attitude towards the system

  A. Doubtful. B. Supportive.

  C. Uncaring. D. Negative.

3.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 4 refer to

  A. Security breach. B. Employees’ productivity.

  C. The right to privacy. D. Workplace surveillance.

4.Phil Legg’s concern about the system suggests that ________.

  A. it is too risky to be used at work

  B. it will affect employees’ emotions

  C. it may not be so effective as expected

  D. it will encourage employee, productivity

Cars are everywhere. In big city and small towns, the preferred method of transportation is the automobile. People can get to where they need to go quickly and easy, and it has given a new kind of freedom to many people who may not have experienced it ago. But is driving really the best thing for our society I argue that it is not. First, pollution was a serious problem, and more cars only make them worse. There is just not way to reduce pollution without decrease the number of cars on the road. Second, cars are very dangerous. Traffic accidents are responsible tens of thousands of deaths every year. Finally, cars are so expensive for most people to afford. However, that doesn’t stop low-income families from spending the most of their money to pay for the family car.

  三、閱讀理解

Some people find visiting ordinary museums to be a bit dull. Fortunately for them, there are unusual museums to check out, such as underwater museums!

How can you visit and what can you see

Many underwater museums are supported by companies that offer guided tours. A trained guide leads groups around a stunning underwater display of statues in each museum. Depending on the depth of the museum, visitors may be able to view the sculptures from a glass bottomed boat or by swimming on the surface. Other underwater museums are deeper and are most accessible to scuba divers.

  Whyarethemuseumsunderwater

Underwater museums have many functions. One of their aims is to create a man-made reef environment where sea creatures can live. That’s why some of the museums are located in areas that were damaged by hurricanes or are considered underwater ‘‘deserts’’. The statues in the museum are designed in a way that encourages the growth of coal and plant life. Over time, the statues and plants attract a growing number of fish to the area.

  Florida, U.S.A.

Florida is home to different types of underwater museums. The state’s newest underwater museum, the Underwater Museum of Art, can be found off the coast of Grayton Beach. This part of the Gulf Mexico is an underwater desert, so creators hope that the exhibit will improve the marine ecosystem.

  Cancun, Mexico

For years, Cancun has been a popular tourist destination. And one of the major draws is the water. The Museo Subacuatico de Arte is an ideal place for snorkelers and first-time divers. There they can enjoy more than 500 statues that help to make up a man-made reef. This museum was created to offer visitors a replacement for the areas natural reef, which has been damaged.

  Canary Island, Spain

Museo Atlantico, off the coast of Lanzarote, has an impressive display of more than 300 statues. They were created by the same sculptor who made the Cancun statues. They focus on man’s interaction with the marine world.

1.According to the passage, which of the following statements is true

  A. If the underwater museum is very deep, viewers can pay a visit by boat or by swimming.

  B. Underwater museums are partly intended to rebuild the damaged ecosystem in the sea.

  C. The underwater museum in Cancun gives tourists a chance to view the natural reef.

  D. States in Museo Atlantico are similar to those of Cancun because of the same sculptor.

2.What is the author’s purpose of writing this essay

  A. To persuade. B. To amuse.

  C. To inspire. D. To inform.

Beyoncé Knowles can do something that many humans struggle with: sing and dance at the same time. But, it turns out this great ability is not unique to humans. The superb lyrebird, already known to be a gifted singer, can perform coordinated(協調的)song-and-dance routines(一套舞蹈動作)that put most humans to shame.

The superb lyrebird is one of only two lyrebird species living in Australia, the other named Albert’s lyrebird. Male lyrebirds have tails in the shape of an ancient musical instrument when spread out. Like most animals with beautiful body parts, the males use their tails to attract females. Each one sets up a small mound(小丘)on the forest floor, where he walks around proudly and sings. He also shows his tail by holding it over his head.

Lyrebirds are gifted mimics(模仿者), so their songs combine their own calls, the songs of other species, and sounds they have heard in the forest. That would be enough showing off for other animals, but male superb lyrebirds also dance.

Anastasia Dalziell of the Australian National University in Canberra filmed 12 lyrebirds in the wild. She found that males only danced during four song types, and that each song type was accompanied by a specific move. “Lyrebirds match different dance styles to different types of songs, ”she says. For example, when the male sang a series of rapid notes he also stepped to the side and held his tail wide. Another song type was accompanied by jumping and moving up and down, with the tail held narrow.

“Our results suggest that the coordination between song and dance—like movements we see in humans can occur in other animals,” says Dalziell. Female lyrebirds might prefer males that are better at coordinating song and dance, although there is no evidence of that yet.

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology may soon be a useful tool for doctors. It may help them better understand and treat diseases like breast cancer in ways that were never before possible.

Rishi Rawat teaches AI at the University of Southern California’s (USC) Clinical Science Center in Los Angeles. He is part of a team of scientists who are researching how AI and machine learning can more easily recognize cancerous growths in the breast. Rawat provides information about cancer cells to a computer. He says this data helps the machine learn. “...You can put the data into them and they will learn the patterns and the pattern recognition that’s important to making decisions.”

David Agus is another USC researcher. He believes that “machines are not going to take the place of doctors.” He adds, “Computers will not treat patients, but they will help make certain decisions and look for things that the human brain can’t recognize these patterns by itself.”

Once a confirmed cancerous growth is removed, doctors still have to treat the patient to reduce the risk of cancer returning. The form of treatment depends on the kind of cancer. Currently, researchers take a thin piece of tissue, put it on a small piece of glass and add color to better see the cells. This process could take days or even longer. Scientists say artificial intelligence can do something better than just count cells. Through machine learning, it can recognize complex patterns, or structures, and learn how the cells are organized. The hope is that machines will soon be able to make a quick diagnosis(診斷)of cancer that is free of human mistakes.

“All of a sudden, we have the computing power to really do it in real time...We couldn’t have done this, we didn’t have the computing power to do this several years ago, but now it’s all changed.” Agus adds that the process could be done “for almost no cost in the developing world.” He says that having a large amount of information about patients is important for a machine to effectively do its job in medicine.

A doctor faces a series of critical decisions every day. The best a doctor can do is to make those decisions as informed as possible. Some of them are still hard to make. A doctor can ask people of whom he values their opinions and that’s it. Imagine discussing these with an AI system that is even more rational(理性的)than anyone else.

The University of Southern California researchers are now only studying breast cancer. But doctors predict artificial intelligence will one day make a difference in all forms of cancer.

1.According to Rawat and David Agus, AI can be used to ___________.

  A. take the place of doctors B. treat all forms of cancer

  C. remove doctors’ mistakes D. help doctors diagnose cancer

2.From the passage, we learn that doctors may benefit from AI because it can ___________.

  A. use data to recognize patterns of cancer

  B. decide on the form of cancer treatment

  C. reduce the risk of cancer returning

  D. monitor the medical procedure

3.What does the underlined word “critical” in Paragraph 6 mean

  A. reliable B. important

  C. evident D. doubtful

4.What’s the best title for the passage

  A. How Do AI Systems Work B. Can AI Cure Cancer

In my class in middle school, there was a girl who was considered the outcast of our class. No one actually knows how this exclusion originated, but we all followed it for no reason at all. One day after lunch, we girls sat on the track field, talking about little things that happened in our little lives. Someone brought her up, and soon the topic transformed to mocking the funny texture of her hair, the awkward way she walked and…. I felt extremely uncomfortable but kept silent, because I didn’t want to be the one “supporting” the common enemy. After all, it’s just a mild ranting session among a trusted group of friends, why should I bring unnecessary tension

Suddenly, one of my friends pointed her finger towards somewhere behind me. All of us turned around and saw that exact girl, hand still in the air, with a twisted look on her face. She lowered her hand in slow motion, blinked really hard for a few seconds, then turned around and ran off. For a second I wanted to stand up and chase her down to tell her that no one meant what they said, and that she is an amazing person being who she is. But my legs felt so heavy: I didn’t want to make a fool out of myself—why bother taking care of the class clown(小丑) People would think that I was crazy as well!

No one spoke a word for a long time; we were all so caught up in our thoughts. I tried opening my mouth but couldn’t—no words were coming out. Then one person started talking about the weather, and all of us were more than glad to follow this flow.

A few weeks later, the teacher told us that a classmate dropped out of school—it was that girl. Her parents told the school that it was the peer pressure that made her want to leave. The teacher wanted to know who the bully was. Again, no one spoke a word. Perhaps it was exactly this cold, hard silence that drove her away. I certainly did not raise my hand—I had never even said anything bad about her; it was my friends who loved to make fun of her awkwardness every day.

Surely, I didn’t bully her physically or with my language, but I kept silent when others did. By failing to stand up for her and offering her support, I was giving tacit(心照不宣的.)agreement. This agreement made others think that it was okay to mistreat her, because “no one cares anyways”. Perhaps I did realize I was bullying her—but by convincing myself that I had nothing to do with her leaving, I wouldn’t have to bear the burden of heavy shame on my shoulders.

Real life is not like a Hollywood movie, and the protagonists don’t always have the courage to compensate for our mistakes. In that classroom, my feet were glued to the ground once again, thinking of all the possibilities that could embarrass me in front of the whole class. What if she doesn’t appreciate my effort and just walk off What if she misunderstands my actions as sympathy and gets upset Worst of all, what if my own group mates disapprove of my decision Am I really willing to risk my friendship just to help out one girl that I’ve seldom spoken to

To be honest, I still don’t have answers to these questions. I don’t know if the answers to those questions even exist. However, what I do know is that nothing will change if I keep thinking and never take actions. Talking to someone in need of support would mean the world to them, while it takes little to none effort for me. So what if those actions are under appreciated At least I will be satisfied knowing that I did the right thing.

1.What can we conclude from the underlined sentences in Paragraph 2

  A. The author cared about others’ opinions. B. The author’s legs gave out after running.

  C. The author was fooled by the classmates. D. The author didn’t like the class clown.

2.Why did the girl drop out of school

  A. Because she had to support her family. B. Because she was bullied by her peers.

  C. Because she was scolded by her teacher. D. Because she had conflicts with her peers.

3.Seeing the girl being bullied, the author felt ___________.

  A. cheerful and amused B. surprised and stressed

  C. frightened and awkward D. uncomfortable and concerned

4.The author didn’t support the girl for the following reasons EXCEPT that ___________.

  A. the author wanted to follow the flow

  B. the author didn’t want to betray friends

  C. the author was prevented by the group mates

  D. the author worried about the girl’s misunderstanding

5.Who does the underlined word “protagonists” in Paragraph 5 refer to

  A. people living in real life B. people in Hollywood movies

  C. people who are bullied D. people who respect others

6.What will the writer probably do when meeting the same situation next time

  A. She will keep silent and walk away. B. She will stand up for her group mates.

  C. She will report the case to the teacher. D. She will not tolerate bullying again.

  四、任務型閱讀

Every January for the past 20 years, I have taken a few moments to consider the answer to the big question, “What is the meaning of life”. The reason I ask this question year after year is that my answer changes over time, which I find interesting and insightful. There is no objectively correct answer, I believe—only answers that are right for you at any given time. This question is so important—philosophically and practically in terms of how we live our lives— yet we are unable to really think about the answer.

Doing this simple exercise might even help you live longer. According to two separate studies —one with 9,000 participants around age 65 and another with 6,000 people between 20 and 75—those who could explain the meaning and purpose of their lives died later than those who saw their lives as aimless. It didn’t seem to matter what meaning participants ascribed to their lives, whether it was personal (such as happiness), or creative (such as making art). It was having an answer to the question that mattered. The connection to longevity(長壽)could be causal—having purpose may help one manage daily stress, as other research has shown. But it could also be that those who think about life’s meaning are more likely to do other activities that promote good health.

Great thinkers have given the question thought. Leo Tolstoy wrote, “The sole meaning of life is to serve humanity.” Albert Einstein said: “Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.” My favorite answer, though, is “The purpose of life is a life of purpose.”

Some have concluded that life’s meaning is subjective. “There is not one standard meaning for all,” author Anas Nin once said. “There is only the meaning we each give to our life, an individual meaning, an individual plot, like an individual novel, a book for each person.” I agree, which is why I recommend formulating(構想)your own answer. Taking a few moments to record your response to the question “What is the meaning of life” is the kind of simple exercise that effectively adds meaning to your life.

And then I suggest answering it every year. Looking back at how your thinking has evolved and been influenced by experience tells you something more about yourself. Then, it gets you closer to a deeper self-understanding.

If you do the annual “meaning” exercise, I suggest not looking at past answers before answering anew. I write them down on the same now-yellowing piece of paper and keep it someplace safe.

The last suggestion is to turn your answer into action. If you conclude, as Tolstoy and Einstein did, that the meaning of life is helping others, that should help motivate you to do more of it.

This is not a theoretical exercise. Whatever small step you take toward finding the meaning of life is a step toward a more meaningful, and longer life. Why not do this simple annual “meaning” exercise from now on

  請認真閱讀下面文字,并按照要求用英語寫一篇150詞左右的文章。

Henderson Island is a tiny, unpopulated(無人居住的)island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean,3,000 miles from major city centers. Though it is half the size of Manhattan, more than 19 tons of plastic waste litter its white, sandy beaches.

Researchers estimate(估計) that it has the highest concentration of waste of any place in the world with a total of over 37 million pieces of trash in all on the small island. For every square meter you walk, on average you’ll find 672 pieces of trash.

Mismanaged waste from land goes into waterways, which feed into larger rivers, which in turn empty into ocean. In this way, plastic from far inland can travel many miles to the coastline, bringing an estimated 9 million tons of plastic every year.

Meanwhile, ocean plastic is estimated to kill millions of animals every year. Nearly 700 species have been reported to be affected by it. Species of all sizes, from zooplankton(浮游動物)to whales, now eat microplastics, the bits smaller than one-fifth of an inch across.

Are people less happy or more happy the older they get A study found that people generally become happier and experience less worry after age 50、 In fact, it found that by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were at 18、

The finding came from a Gallup survey of more than 340,000 adults between the age of 18 and 85 in the United States、

Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study、 His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 22 and 25、 Stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties、

Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies、 But the people least likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their seventies and eighties、 The survey also found that men and women had similar emotional patternsas they grow older、 However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men did、

The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single、 But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age、

So why would happiness increase with age One theory is that, as people get older, they become more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions、 They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences、

The original goal of the study was to confirm the popular belief that aging is connected with increased sleep problems、 The survey did find an increase during middle age, especially in women、 But except for that , people reported that they felt their sleep quality improved as they got older、

1、Old people may be happier probably because _________

A、 their children have grown up、 B、 they don’t have to work every day、

C、 they can do whatever they like best、 D、 they are most likely satisfied with life、

C、 The young people and the old people、 D、 The connection of sleep and happiness、

I love charity(慈善) shops and so do lots of other people in Britain because you find quite a few of them on every high street、 The charity shop is a British institution, selling everything from clothes to electric goods, all at very good prices、 You can get things you won’t find in the shops anymore、 The thing I like best about them is that your money is going to a good cause and not into the pockets of profit-driven companies, and you are not damaging the planet, but finding a new home for unwanted goods、

The first charity shop was opened in 1947 by Oxfam、 The famous charity’s appeal to aid postwar Greece had been so successful it had been flooded with donations(捐贈物)、 They decided to set up a shop to sell some of these donations to raise money for that appeal、 Now there are over 7,000 charity shops in the UK、 My favourite charity shop in my hometown is the Red Cross shop, where I always find children’s books, all 10 or 20 pence each、

Most of the people working in the charity shops are volunteers, although there is often a manager who gets paid、 Over 90% of the goods in the charity shops are donated by the public、 Every morning you see bags of unwanted items outside the front of shops, although they don’t encourage this, rather ask people to bring things in when the shop is open、

The shops have very low running costs: all profits go to charity work、 Charity shops raise more than £110 million a year, funding(資助) medical research, overseas aid, supporting sick and poor children, homeless and disabled people, and much more、 What better place to spend your money You get something special for a very good price and a good moral sense、 You provide funds to a good cause and tread lightly on the environment、

1、The author loves the charity shop mainly because of 、

C、 Charity Shop: Where You Buy to Donate、

  D、 The Public’s Concern about Charity Shops、

I began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt’s house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America、 We were on the bus then、 I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me、 I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning、

I do not remember myself crying for this reason again、 In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives、 When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see—the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures、 The country I was leaving and never to come back was hardly in my head then、

The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism(樂觀), but the idea did not come to me at once、 For the first two years in New York I was really lost—having to study in three schools as a result of family moves、 I did not quite know what I was or what I should be、 Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me、 Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other、 I was often sad, and saw no end to “the hard times、”

My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home、 I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with Immigration officers(移民局官員), took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives、

From my experiences I have learned one important rule: Almost all common troubles go away at last! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy、

  三、閱讀理解

When you’re abroad, trying to find out who to tip is never straightforward and neither is trying to work out the exact number. To make things even more complicated, the rules for tipping vary greatly from country to country. Also, within each country the rules can change, so what was appropriate last time you visited your favourite country may be completely inappropriate the next time you go. However, here are some general guidelines which might help you on your journeys.

You face your first dilemma as soon as you land at the airport— the taxi ride. Taxi drivers generally do expect tips, but rather than there being an exact amount, people round up the fare or just tell the driver to keep the change.

Your next encounter is with the hotel porter and you know he’s expecting a tip, but the problem is trying to figure out how much. It seems that in many countries round the world $1 per bag would be an appropriate amount.

Then, of course, you have to eat. In some countries such Ireland, Brazil, Poland and Portugal, the customary tip in restaurants is 10-15% unless a service charge is included, so the first rule of thumb is always check the bill. In other countries such as France, Italy, Germany, Australia and Spain, where a 10-15% service charge is either very common or compulsory, you may want to leave an additional tip if you think the service was particularly good, but it certainly isn’t obligatory. However, in some countries it may seem strange if you do leave a tip. In Japan, for example, the waitress might be insulted if you tipped her. In Thailand, if you left a tip, the restaurant staff probably wouldn’t be offended, but you might be pursued down the street by someone thinking you’d forgotten to take your change. In New Zealand, although it’s unlikely anyone would chase after you, you’d definitely get some odd looks if you left a trip.

And your problem with tipping isn’t over when you leave the restaurant. Next you discover the tour guide, the hairdresser and the toilet attendant are all expecting a tip as well, but again, how much Perhaps the best option in these cases is to ask the local people what is acceptable or observe what others do. Of course, you could simply play safe and tip everyone you meet.

1.The word “dilemma” (in paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to _____________.

  A. a difficult situation B. an early opportunity

  C. a high expectation D. an exact explanation

2.What does the writer suggest tourists do in countries like Brazil

  A. Never tip waiters or waitresses because they may be offended.

  B. Play safe and leave a tip about 12% of the bill after each meal.

  C. Make sure whether a service charge is included in the bill before giving tips.

  D. Always check whether you have kept all your change before leaving the restaurant.

  3.People needn’t tip waiters in _____________.

  A. Ireland and France B. Germany and Japan

  C. Poland and Italy D. Thailand and New Zealand

4.What is the passage mainly about

  A. Advantages of tipping. B. Rules of tipping.

  C. Possible origins of tipping. D. Different opinions on tipping.

There are thirty-four bridges on the Thames River in London, the following are among the most famous ones.

  Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge has stood over the River Thames in London since 1894 and is one of the finest, most recognizable bridges in the World. It is the bridge in London you may see in movies and on advertising writing for London. Tower Bridge is the only Thames Bridge that can be raised. It used to be raised about 50 times a day, but nowadays it is only raised 4 to 5 times a week.

  London Bridge

The construction of the first stone London Bridge started in 1176 and finished years later. Houses and shops were once built on the bridge, which made the road so narrow that it was often jammed with people, horses and carts. A ‘keep left’ rule was made in 1733 to keep the traffic moving. This became the rule of the road in Britain. In 1757 the old bridge was pulled down and a new one was built in 1831. Interestingly, that one was pulled down again in 1967 but rebuilt in Lake Havasu City, USA, as a tourist attraction. The present London Bridge was opened in 1973.

  Millennium Bridge

The Millennium Bridge is a bridge for walkers. It was built to connect the Tate Modern Art Gallery to the City and St Paul’s Cathedral (圣保羅大教堂) in 2000. Thousands of people rushed to see the new bridge. Almost immediately after opening, the bridge had to be shut because of the dangerous waving caused by too many visitors. It has now been reopened. The bridge is about 320 meters, costs 16 million pounds to build and only takes walkers.

  Westminster Bridge

Westminster Bridge is a road and foot traffic bridge over the River Thames between Westminster and Lambeth. The present bridge, opened in 1862, is the second on the site and took the place of an earlier bridge opened in 1750. The British romantic poet, William Wordsworth, wrote a famous poem “Composed Upon Westminster Bridge” in the autumn of 1802.

2.The Passage is most probably taken from a ________.

  A. school report B. website article

  C. teenage magazine D. science fiction

3.What can we learn from the passage

  A. William Wordsworth wrote many poems of the bridges on the Thames River.

  B. Millennium Bridge wasn’t built strong enough so that it had to be pulled down and rebuilt.

  C. That all the traffic is kept left in Britain was from a rule of an old London Bridge.

Mountain regions are not just playgrounds for the richer citizens on the planet, however. The disappearing snows of Mount Kilimanjaro are a worrying sign that nowhere is safe from the adverse effects of human actions. The United Nations has identified three main areas that need to be addressed to ensure the future safety of the world’s mountains. These are: the protection of mountain ecosystems, the encouragement of peace and stability in mountain regions, and assistance for mountain people to maintain their ways of life.

From the busy cities of India to the farmlands of California, more than half the world’s population is dependent on mountains for their fresh water supply. Global warming, deforestation, mining and heavy farming seriously damage breakable mountain ecosystems and put vital fresh water sources at risk.

Mountain regions host a large proportion of the world’s wars. From Afghanistan to the Balkans and the Andes to many parts of Africa, territorial(領土的) and drug related conflicts have damaging effects on the local environment and the lives of the local people. Fighting makes essential tasks such as farming impossible. Land mines make large areas of potential farming ground unusable. Also schools, roads, bridges and other important infrastructure(基礎設施) are left in ruins.

Mountain people are among the poorest, least represented groups on the earth. They face many hardships and each day can be, “a test of survival”. Damage to mountain ecosystems worsens their situation and leaves them even more unprotected to disease and ‘natural’ disasters such as floods and landslides. It’s been recommended that forest profit should be reinvested in mountain communities and the people living there should be given a stronger political voice. Their fate is in many ways directly connected with that of people living at sea level.

There is an old motto for visitors to the countryside which advises them to leave nothing but footprints. It is still as relevant today as it always was. Unfortunately, the size of our footprints seems to be getting larger.

1.What the writer discussed in the previous sections is most probably about .

  A. mountain ecosystems B. mountain regions

  C. mountain people D. mountain sports

2.The word “adverse” (paragraph 1) is closest in meaning to “__________”.

  A. direct B. harmful

  C. positive D. powerful

3.Wars have directly brought the following effects EXCEPT __________.

  A. inadequate supply of fresh water B. impossible farming

  C. mountain people’s poor living condition D. ruined infrastructure

4.Which of the following can be inferred from the passage

  A. Mountain people have enough political voice to protect themselves.

  B. More money should be raised to establish mountain communities.

  C. Worsened ecosystems put mountain people’s lives under threat.

  D. Visitors to mountains have left nothing but large footprints.

  四、七選五

  Driving each other crazy

There’s a well-known joke: A woman is driving down a motorway and her husband phones her on her mobile. ‘Darling, be careful!’ he screams, ‘I’ve just heard there’s a car driving the wrong way on the motorway near where you are.’ ‘It’s not just one car,’ she says, ‘there are hundreds of them!’

And here’s another one: a man is driving his daughter and they are stuck in traffic. The little girl says, ‘I have a question.’ ‘What is it’ asks her father. ‘When you’re driving, are YOU ever the stupid idiot’

  1. Is it because we recognize some truth in them A lot of people seem to think that men and women do display quite different characteristics when it comes to driving, and in general, both male and female drivers tend to be quite critical of the opposite sex.

‘Men are too confident in their own abilities. They never listen, they never need a map. They’re always sure they know the way,’ says Cathy, whose husband rarely lets her drive the car. ‘They tend to drive too close to the car in front and they’re incredibly impatient. If there’s a car in front, they have to pass it even if it doesn’t make a difference to their overall speed. I think it’s some sort of territorial thing.2..

What do men think about women3.‘Women passengers can’t keep quiet,’ says Paul, a retired architect. ‘You know: “You’re going too fast”, “Can you see that pedestrian”, “Didn’t you see that traffic light” or “I feel sick. Can’t you go straight” There’s always some comment.’

Despite men’s generally high opinion of their own driving skills, a report published in 2004 came down firmly in favour of women drivers.4.There included driving within the speed limits, overtaking safety and conducting different strategies successfully, including signaling in good time, reversing and braking quickly. They also had a better awareness of other drivers on the road. There was only one aspect of driving where women did not perform as successfully as men and that was—no surprise—the ability to park their cars.

  A. They have to be king of the road and everybody else on the road is an idiot

  B. So what’s the point of these jokes

  C. Interestingly, one of their main concerns is about women as passengers.

  D. There is no doubt that women are considered better passengers than men.

  E. According to the report, women score more highly than men on almost all counts.

  F. Why do we laugh at these jokes

  五、概要寫作

Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main points of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Getting up early has been regarded as a good habit since ancient times. Many years ago, people thought that if we went to bed early and get up early, we would be energetic the whole day. Nowadays, people still hold the same view. So, getting up early is of great importance to us all.

In fact, morning is the best time of a day. In the morning, the air is the freshest and people are usually in the best conditions. Many of us may have the experiences that we memorize some things more quickly and accurately in the morning than any other time of the day.

In addition, if we get up early and do some morning exercise or only take a short walk in the morning, without doubt we can build our bodies and become much healthier. That is why many people getting up early do physical exercise year after year.

Also, we will have enough time to make a plan and get ready for our work or study of the day if we get up early. However, if we get up late, we will probably have to do everything in a great hurry, making it in a mess.

Let us remember getting up early is a good habit and try our best to keep it. If we stick to getting up early every day, we will certainly benefit a lot from it.
